Physical Therapy and Weak Muscles

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Don’t forget to put the stars and stripes out on your flagpoles tomorrow.

Well, it’s been 6 weeks since I was to get off crutches. I took about 2 weeks to wean myself off them, using them for longer walks or 1 crutch at times. After 2 weeks of walking completely without them, I still had a limp. This included a trip to 6th Street for my sister’s bachelorette party. Dr. Gueramy saw me walk into the exam room for a check-up and right away he saw that my hip muscles were still weak and he prescribed some physical therapy. Apparently, the leg muscles by your hip get weak when you cut through them to reach the femur to insert a titanium rod into it. Who would have thought?

So it’s been 2 weeks now, since I started physical therapy. Man, is it tough. Brant, my phsyical therapist, has given me 6 exercises to do at home every single day. Plus when I go to Sante Rehab for my appointments with him 3 times a week, I do some additional exercises. The elliptical machine is good for working on my gait. It’s really hard going backwards though. I have PT for another 4 weeks, we’ll see how that goes. Maybe by then, I’ll be running. (Highly doubtful, you’ll actually see me running, I’d rather speed walk.)

Lesson for the day: Be grateful for two properly working legs.
