Mojo Monday Sketch 94

So I went to my friend Lori‘s to stamp this afternoon. I am very happy with how my two cards came out. They both use the Mojo Monday Sketch 94. They both also meet  Our Creative Corner’s challenge to use an animal, although I took creative license and used an animal that  is not normally considered a pet, unless you’re the Pioneer Woman and bottle feed a calf. The bottom one meets the High Hopes Stamps Challenge #39 to use daisies (although if the challenge requires you to use a High Hopes Stamp, it doesn’t meet the requirements). The stamp set I used, which is manufactured by C.C. Designs, is really neat because it allowed me to use the same focal image and just change up the sentiment and coordinating image to create two totally different cards.

All That Scraps Anniversary

C.C. Designs is a maker of rubber stamps and their company blog is All That Scraps. I first found out about them about a year ago and I enjoy all the cute stamps they come out with. They are celebrating their 2nd anniversary and to celebrate, they are running a contest. Yesterday when I got together with Lori to stamp, I made two cards for the contest. The first one utilizes Saturday’s Sketch for You to Try by Jen del Muro.

A Birthday Present for Sarah

My sister Sarah’s birthday was back in February. Initially, I was going to mail hers and her husband’s birthday gifts (their birthdays are about 2 weeks apart). But we procrasinated about picking out a gift for Brian (see his card here), so they just got their gifts last weekend when we visited for my nephew’s 1st birthday. That said, I didn’t want to post the gift I made for her until after she opened it, because she is a faithful reader of my blog and she didn’t need any sneak peaks.

Julia Aston of Create With Me inspired me to make this little bag. I found a tutorial by Julie Buhler here and I modified it slightly since the clear card boxes I had purchased were not as deep. Julie also showed how to make the scallop rectangle using the scallop border punch.

The other pocket of the bag was filled with a plain white notepad (pack of 10 purchased at Staples) that I monogrammed each sheet of and a pen filled with a strip of the patterned paper. I used my Just Rite Monogram Stamper and I found the idea for trimming the “From the Desk of” border at their blog here, which is an awesome idea.

Shout Out to SheetLoad

I browse numerous blogs and enjoy the challenges posed by many of them. When I got together with Lori this past Sunday for some stamping time, I worked two challenges into the below 5.5-inch square card. This card is going to my brother-in-law for his birthday. His birthday was actually a month ago, but since I took a while trying to figure out what to get him and since we’re visiting them in two weeks for my nephew’s 1st birthday, he had to wait for his card and gift. So Sarah, don’t let him look at this post.  Not that I think Brian actually reads my blog.

Sheet Load of Cards is a site that puts out a free monthly ezine that contains a sketch and cutting instructions to make a sheet load of cards. The ezine also contains various takes on the sketch by their staff of sample artists. Typically, the samples use stamps by that month’s sponsor company. Check out March 2009’s issue here. They also do two monthly contests. One gives people who give a shout out to SheetLoad on their blog a chance to win. The other gives people who make their own take on the sketch a chance to win. So this post is doing double duty by shouting out and displaying my take of the sketch.

Stamp Something‘s challenge this week is to use the color green. So I used 2 shades of green cardstock, 2 green-based designer papers, green ribbon, and green markers to color part of my stamped image. The sketch challenge and color challenge worked very well together and I am quite pleased with how cute this card turned out. Don’t you just love the fuzzy  feel  that the flock gives to Riley’s horns?

Kristy’s 2008 Birthday

My friend Kristy’s birthday was October 8th. Since she works at AMD with my husband, I baked up a cake for him to take to the office.  Kristy likes angel food cake, but I didn’t  have quite enough eggs, so I baked a chiffon cake, which requires about a third less eggs. According to Kristy and James, the cake was a  gastronomic success, regardless of my cake leveling skills. If I make it again, I would use a bit more orange juice in the glaze.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour or 2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons grated orange peel
  • 7 large egg yolks (with all-purpose flour) or 5 large egg yolks (with cake flour)
  • 1 cup large egg whites (about 8 )
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Orange Glaze

Directions:

Move oven rack to lowest position. Preheat oven to 325°F.

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Beat in water, oil, orange peel and egg yolks with electic mixer on low speed until smooth.

With clean beaters, beat egg whites and cream of tartar in large bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Gradually pour egg yolk mixture over beaten egg whites, folding in with rubber spatula just until blended. Pour into ungreased angel food cake pan (tube pan), 10×4 inches.

Bake about 1 hour 15 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly. Immediately turn pan upside down onto heatproof funnel or bottle. Let hang about 2 hours or until cake is completely cool. Loosen side of cake with knife or long metal spatula; remove from pan.

Spread Orange Glaze over top of cake, allowing some to drizzle down side.

Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup butter or stick margarine
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons orange juice

Directions:

Melt butter in 1 1/2-quart saucepan over low heat; remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and orange peel. Stir in orange juice, 1 tablespoon at a time, until smooth and consistency of thick syrup. Glazes one 12-cup bundt cake, 10-inch angle food or chiffon cake or top of an 8- or 9-inch layer cake.

I made her the following card using a Stamp Something sketch challenge. I’m really happy with how it turned out, maybe my best card yet. A great technique I used in making this card is the easy peasy bow embellishment. I then decided to decorate a paper mache box I had picked up at Hobby Lobby to match the card and house Kristy’s gift, a Stampin’ Up stamp set she had pointed out to me.
